It all started with the purchase of a 1984 VW Rabbit back in 2004, simply as a commuter car. It was purchased for its great gas mileage (45-50 mpg) over a truck that was currently being driven about 40 miles a day. Never in my mind would I have guessed, I would be here, several years later, documenting and sharing my projects and experiences with alternative fuels.

The old rabbit was purchased as its fourth owner in 21 years. The car's first owner bought it new in 1984 for around $7k in southern Maine. Its first owner sold it around 100k miles probably thinking it was at the end of its life as most cars were, 20 years ago. Its second owner, a retired man, only drove the car during the summer months while in Maine. Its most recent owner, a VW diesel buff who had owned several rabbits before, was ready to buy a TDI.

At 235k miles, the engine runs strong and could easily reach 400k miles, if properly maintained, which is very common with diesel engines. Amazingly, many of the parts on the car are original, but on the flip side, many parts are in need of replacement. But the parts are cheap and because the car is entirely mechanical, is easy to repair. It is also efficient on fuel consumption, averaging around 45-50 mpg. When using vegetable oil as a fuel, which is free, fill-ups are only required every few weeks! Am I saving money on this old car with its frequent repairs? Probably not, but at this point, it is an ongoing experimental research project, that is explained elsewhere on this site.

Soon after posting information on this project a year ago, when it started, interest and inquires became quite strong from around the globe! This web site has been used for 4th grade science projects in Pennsylvania, high school projects in Vancouver, referenced in a PhD dissertation and many other inquires regarding particular details. Although the content within does not go into a lot of scientific detail nor provide details on what is required to convert a car, since it has already been covered in many other places elsewhere on the internet. Also you will find that each set up is done differently, based on the person's situation, needs, knowledge and available resources. See resources for links to sites that can provide more information.

Anyway, the greasy rabbit is currently in the body shop having its exterior restored and repainted and should be back on the road shortly.
